![]() It simply is too gimmicky and old school to go up against the best of Pixar and DreamWorks Animation. “Space Chimps” is a bright, entertaining package. The chimp humor might go a tad overboard with a communication gizmo called a BananaBerry and Titan’s endless puns using the word “chimp.” Meanwhile, a few jokes aim very much over young heads straight for adult guardians. The adventures are inventive enough but do lack the genuine sense of jeopardy and humor that made Fox’s “Ice Age” movies boxoffice champs. And who better to lead the mission than the great one’s grandson. Colors pop off the screen, there's plenty of crisp detail in the images and there's scarcely a nit to pick with this visual presentation. It's a computer-animated flick, circa 2010, so there's not much to complain about here. Since no human astronauts are silly enough to rocket blindly into who-knows-where, it’s time to call the chimps back into service. Space Chimps 2: Zartog Strikes Back arrives on DVD with a 1.78:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer. This space odyssey sets the table for any number of amusing action sequences and odd creatures, like Kilowatt (Kristin Chenoweth), who looks like a tiny walking light bulb that illuminates whenever she gets frightened. loses a billion-dollar space probe in a mysterious cosmic wormhole and decides that somebody must fetch it. Slipping through an intergalactic wormhole to retrieve a missing space probe, the crew falls into an alternative world of brightly colored creatures ruled by an authoritarian grump, Zartog (Jeff Daniels) - think Shrek without wit or wits - who dreams of creating a Vegas-like palace around a huge volcano. Only Ham (voiced by Andy Samberg) is a circus performer, more interested in antic tricks and acrobatics than space exploration, much to the distress of his space companions, lovely Luna (Cheryl Hines) and the ship’s stiff commander Titan (Patrick Warburton). The Space Agency recruits Ham III, grandson of the first chimp in space. If you're a respectable production that wants to be taken seriously and can't even scrounge up the coin to license Yello's 1985 hit 'Oh Yeah,' instead electing to use a tinny sound-alike.that should be the first clue that something is seriously awry with the movie. You have to wonder how a picture with Andy Samberg and Patrick Warburton scores major names like Stanley Tucci and Jeff Daniels. The story by director Kirk De Micco and Rob Moreland imagines that an urgent space mission, far too dangerous for humans, is turned over to chimpanzees, as were the earliest U.S. 'Space Chimps' is many things, but the one advantage it lacks is a sizable budget. The vocal performances here are largely underused or wasted. One of those films that is targeting the children, and doesn't have much to appeal to an adult.Box Office: 'The Little Mermaid' Swimming to $118M-Plus Memorial Day Debut The characters were stereotypical the strict, muscle bound commander, the irresponsible slacker, and the token female, but the little ones loved the film, and it managed to keep them quiet most of the time. It was definitely not a believable movie, but it did what it was meant to do. To the kids, it is a colourful, action-packed movie with talking monkeys and aliens in it. ![]() But these aren't things that children would understand. This film was certainly entertaining, though it was certainly predictable, due to the rather one-dimensional personalities of the characters. ![]() ![]() I can "babysit" and watch some free movies. In fact it is one of the joys of visiting my friends who have children. Sometimes you just want to watch a bunch of talking monkeys getting blasted into space and having adventures. The only thing entertaining about 'Space Chimps' is an entertaining and spirited performance by Kristin Chenoweth ('RV') as Kilowatt, a quirky and adorable alien creature who is, unfortunately, a supporting player for these festivities. When you live in the world of a mature adult, sometimes it's good to be able to escape from the banal monotony that our lives become. I do have to admit, that movies aimed at children, are a guilty pleasure of mine. This CGI animated movie is not complex or sophisticated. Space Chimps is the kind of film that offers something for both kids and adults. Colors pop off the screen, theres plenty of crisp detail in the images and theres scarcely a nit to pick with this visual presentation. Its a computer-animated flick, circa 2010, so theres not much to complain about here.
